Someone asked me about the security of their data when it goes to the Data Lodge servers.  They wanted to know how we ensure that they are the only one who has access to their data.  Well, it is a great question.  We actually do quite a bit to make sure your data is safe.

First, our software does not allow you to create a backup set without setting an encryption key for the set.  This means that before data ever leaves your computer, the software will encrypt and compress it using your encryption key.  We also do not keep a record of your encryption key, so we could not use it to decrypt your data.  We highly recommend keeping a record of your encryption key in a safe place in case you ever need to use it.

Second, our software makes use of Secure Channel Communications, otherwise known as SSL.  This bolsters the data security even more.  The software sends encrypted data through an encrypted channel.

Third, upon request we can restrict the IP address range that our service will send data restores to.  An IP address is the numerical address of your computer on the Internet.  By restricting IP addresses we can ensure than no computer except your computer can restore data from our service.

Fourth, our servers are located in a world-class locked down data center in downtown Seattle.  Access to the servers require security clearance to access the room where the servers are stored.  This building also offers earthquake protection, redundant power and internet connectivity.

Lastly, we replicate your encrypted data from our main servers to our backup replication servers, again using Secure Channel Communications. 

We have spent a great deal of time and effort to make sure your data stays safe from viruses, hackers, employee accidents, and even hardware malfunction on our end.  Over the past year Data Lodge has had an uptime record of over 99.9% and no security incidents.
