Unusual Data Disaster Horror Stories for 2007

Each year Kroll Ontrack, one of the most well known clean room facilities in the US, puts together a list of the most bizarre data recovery jobs they have seen. While we don't do the same kind of recoveries Kroll, we have seen our share of damaged hard drives.

People have put their hard drives in the washing machine and used oil to stop it them from squeaking. This just leads off the list. One man found that he had an ant infestation in a removable hard drive, so he took the cover off the hard drive and sprayed it with bug spray. The good news is the ants did not make it, the bad news is that neither did the drive.

Kroll indicates that they have seen more damaged hard drives this year than ever before. It is becoming a steady trend that as we store more and more important data on our drives companies like Kroll will stay in business. The simple fact is that hard drives fail. There is no mystery behind this at all. Kroll's business model banks on the fact that hard drives fail.

What amazes me is that these expensive recoveries could have all been avoided by using a properly designed data backup system.
